Drugs should be legalised - economist

The Economist is launching a new poster campaign that takes their editorial to the street.

As I commented previously The White Out of Red poster campaign is pretty much the definition of big shoes to fill.

[I also said I felt oddly compelled to post that work because Scamp was no longer blogging – but he's back now promoting his new book.]

This seems smart to me – using advertising to sample content is a good idea.

I also like the fact the posters are 'launching' on Facebook – where you can go and discuss your stance on this issues being highlighted, I imagine – makes a campaign specific page make sense since it is, by its very nature, discursive and conversational.

In fact, it's a crucial element – otherwise the Where Do You Stand? line is simply a line, not an invitation to reflect and comment.

It is a very poor decision to legalize drugs in the US. We have held back and prevented as much drug use as possible. If the US all of the sudden decided to make them legal it would be a disaster. Just think of the driving related accidents and deaths, loss of job efficiency, and public sluggishness. Hell, we can’t make the “slacker” title popular again. Earning tax related revenue, possibly reducing violence, and the concept of making it legal and readily available as a way to reduce consumption is short sighted. Only the top bullet in the ad/poster would actually happen. Violence will still reign and since when did the US ever show moderation?! NEVER.

I saw the poster above alongside it’s opposite – “Drugs Should Not be Legalised” – as 48 sheets at New Beckenham train station in south London Yesterday.
Easily the best use of media I’ve seen in a long time, especially as the “Drugs Should Not be Legalised” poster has white text against a black background and a similar picture of the pills on some silver foil ready for freebasing. The posters actually seemed to multiply the effect of each other (if you see what I mean) – I saw people slowing down and even standing still to read them properly, which I don’t think I ever have for billboards before – exactly the type of inquisitive reaction the Economist must thrive on, absolutely awesome!
